I have traveled to the island Kauai several times. On some of the trips, I camped. On other trips I have stayed in hotels.Sometimes I stayed in hotels and camped on
the same trip.
On my most recent trip, we camped at Anini Beach for one
night, camped at Salt Pond Beach for 6 nights, and then stayed in a hotel on our
final night. It only cost $3 per person each night to camp - you need to reserve a spot at the Kauai County website before you go! I put more information to help plan your trip and describe my pictures if you scroll down the screen.

A wonderful adventure trip camping on Kauai Hawaii. Sometimes it gets windy at salt ponds and sometimes an awesome and loud Kauai Uke reggae band plays a bit late at night - so be prepared and enjoy! Some friendly Kauai islanders even offered me some food from their barbeque while the party was going on! Usually the wind dies down at night at salt ponds - however, one night that wasn't the case so the sleeping wasn't that great that night. You might want to check the wind forecast for nights and if a Kona storm (from the west) is moving in, camp on the other side of the island. Met folks from all over the world here - I fiddled for some folks from Ireland and others from Quebec Canada. The lady who cleaned up the Salt Pond park did an excellent job - mahalo!

We really enjoyed our camping trip to Kauai!
On this most recent trip, we camped at Anini Beach for one night, camped at Salt Pond Beach for 6 nights, and then stayed in a hotel on our final night. It only cost $3 per person each night to camp - you need to reserve a spot at the Kauai County website before you go!
We rented a car and ate out in restaurants - there are many excellent and fairly inexpensive locally owned restaurants - eating in these helps support the local economy and they are much more tasty than the corporate owned hotel restraints!
Some people camping didn't rent a car but took the bus around - I would recommend renting a car for at least some of the time on the island.
Sometimes it gets windy at salt pounds and sometimes an awesome and loud Kauai Uke reggae band plays a bit late at night so be prepared and enjoy! Some friendly Kauai islanders even offered me some food from their barbeque while the party was going on! Usually the wind dies down at night at salt ponds - however, one night that wasn't the case so the sleeping wasn't that great that night. Salt Pond Beach - good snorkel area
Salt Pond Beach snorkeling
The snorkeling is excellent by the South end of Salt Pond Beach. There is a protecting reef that shelters the water more at the South end of Salt Pond Beach. Stay inside the protecting reef. The water gets very shallow at the far South end of Salt Pond Beach. Very good for beginners, kids, and experienced snorkelers.
Anini Beach is a beautiful spot on the wet side of the island - it's good to have a tarp to hang over your tent here. Quite a few longtime campers who live here (homeless) most are just fine - sometimes you get someone who took too many drugs like the guy wandering around in the middle of the night who kept asking me if I had a cigarette.
